Jayrem Records has produced and distributed over 150 albums in the period 1977 – 2008. Rarely in the mainstream of pop/rock, Jayrem’s tastes have tended to be specialist - Maori (e.g. Wai, Patea Maori Club, Apanui, Upper Hutt Posse, Elena, Big Belly Woman, Tuahine, Aotearoa Maori Chorale), reggae (e.g. Dread Beat & Blood, David Grace & Injustice, Sticks & Shanty, Simon & Fire), women’s music (e.g. Shona Laing, Mahinarangi Tocker, Charlotte Yates, Hinemoana Baker, Jan Preston), contemporary instrumental (e.g. Brendan Power), country (e.g. The Warratahs, Camille Te Nahu) and jazz/blues (e.g. Hot Club Sandwich, Kokomo, Midge Marsden, Bullfrog Rata). Jayrem has licensed many top selling international reggae acts such as Judy Mowatt, Alpha Blondy, Marcia Griffiths, Burning Spear, Culture, etc. Compilations such as the “Reggae Blasters” and “Sisters In Reggae” series of CD’s met with great success internationally. Jayrem has also enjoyed success with the top American country duo The Bellamy Brothers especially in Australia and the Pacific Islands.
The Licensor/Exporter
Jayrem has become internationally known as a licensor to various like-minded labels (plus majors such as Virgin Records) in the UK, Spain, The Netherlands, USA, Hong Kong and South America and through exports to all major markets in the world. Wai, Aotearoa Maori Chorale and Brendan Power have been Jayrem’s major licensing successes. Jayrem has a distribution agreement with Hot Records (Australia/UK) and Festival Records (Australia) for selected repertoire.
The Publisher
Jayrem currently owns and/or administers approximately 500 original New Zealand music copyrights as well as representing the extensive Bellamy Brothers’ publishing interests in Australasia. Jayrem Records is a member of both AMCOS and APRA.
The Importer/Distributor
In addition to distributing its own recordings, Jayrem also imports and sells labels such Blix Street/Hot (includes Eva Cassidy catalogue … sales in excess of 70,000 CD’s to date), Studio Horizon (Tony O’Connor new age catalogue). Jayrem imports and distributes specialist “re-issue” labels such as Ace, BGO, Cherry Red, Demon/Edsel, Repertoire and Collectors Choice. Jayrem also carries an extensive range of music DVD’s and is the distributor for the internationally successful comedy duo, The Laughing Samoans.
