| January 2010 goodbastard are now on the final stage of the first recording project. September 2009goodbastard are a new band made of some recycled components and some new. All of the members have been involved in writing and performing original music for many years. They include eelman records stalwarts, some holidaymakers and others who have been involved in the renaissance of Maori music in Aotearoa in the past decade. Eelman records managing director, C.E.O, and P.H.D, Professor John Niland, after a decade or two in Sydney has returned to continue work on his oeuvre, the Groove Thesis. Helping him in this endeavour are the rest of the band, Rapai Te Hau, Thelma Baleikasavu, John McDougall, Richard Caigou, Elliot Fuimaono, and Steve Jessup. The band have been rehearsing in living rooms and jamming in lounges; putting together a repertoire of new tunes. They have decided it is time to unleash their mongrel sound amongst the music and mongrel loving public. Dog control officers attending their inaugural show, described them as ‘Well behaved’. And as an afterthought; “Those licks are good enough to make you drool”. The first ever review of a band featuring the Niland/McDougall writing partnership some 1000 years ago described the music as ‘Urban Gruntabilly’, a fitting if somewhat totally mysterious label. Since then the cities have grown up around us and have had to conform to the structure set by this unique form. The group features the sweet and earthy tones of Rapai and Thelma’s voices. The harmonies are moving, bound to make you want to testify!! Or laugh or cry...or get a beer! There is a rich association with Wellington music which goodbastard preserve with their brand of soul music. They acknowledge Barry Crump’s fine novel ’Bastards I’ve Met’ and try to emulate this brand of honest story telling as well as Crumps legendary ability on the dance floor. You have heard of Crumping? From gentle grooves to happy clappy gospel inspired foot stompers the repertoire will get people off their seats dancing. Good for the heart, good for the brain, goodbastard for the soul. |
