commenced 1996.
Presently working on a CD for release late 2002. Working title Under
Fret.
Material for this is a further development of the writing style
developed since the beginning of the SPINES in 1981. Early work
was released as vinyl through Ripper 1981 -1982, Jayrem 1983 - 1985
and Flying Nun 1986 1987 (also released as cassette),
The
SPINES had several lineups whose personnel included Rob Mahoney,
Caroline Esther, Tim Robinson, Wendy Calder, Neil Duncan, Ross Burge
and Antony Donaldson. Also featured Andrew Cross.
These
individuals were members of bands such as CHILLS, SNEAKY FEELINGS,
MUTTON BIRDS, BODY ELECTRIC, HOT CITY CATS, PRIMITIVE ART GROUP,
NEIGHBORS, BEAT RHYTHM FASHION, LETS PLANET, RODENTS AND HULAMEN.
Jon
McLeary came from Hamilton to Wellington in 1980 with Louise Loft
as NEGATIVE THEATRE. Major debut Nambassa 1979. Early material was
acoustic based, theatrical, story based performance. A demo was
developed at SAUSAGE STUDIOS in 1980. McLeary subsequently formed
the SPINES from meeting Wellington musicians 1980 at the ART CENTRE
which was a PEP Scheme set up for artists and musicians.
Major
releases from the SPINES include: FISHING 1981, PUNCH 1982, ACT
YOUR AGE 1983, THE MOON 1985, IDIOT SUN 1986.
Other
bodies of work not released were THE MISCREANT 1988 which is mixed
but not released, SNAKE LIKE LIFE 1991 unmixed.
Videos
were produced by TVNZ Avalon Studio for RADIO WITH PICTURES for
FISHING and YOUR BODY STAYS.
